Vidhi Balar, a student of BSc in Interior Design & Decoration at JD School of Design, Bangalore, took part in the JD Design Awards 2024. Her interests lie in sustainability and ICT; therefore, she designed her project “3D Immersive Pods” to create almost zero-carbon footprints while offering leading virtual reality-based and augmented reality-based technologies.
Vidhi’s 3D Immersive Pods are designed to reduce the carbon footprint and give people unique experiences through the incorporation of immersive and augmented reality technologies. This design would begin by blending advanced technology with eco-friendly practices. Vidhi has used many curves in her design, which, apart from the aesthetic value, generates the flow of space smoothly, thus promoting mental well-being. The biophilic concept is adopted to draw elements of nature into the design and increase the association between the occupants and the natural environment.
The inspiration for the project came from nature and sustainability. The development of this project was in line with research on materials and technologies that would have as little negative influence as possible on the environment. Using as many eco-friendly materials and high technology additions in her design also presents a new workplace that doesn’t only satisfy the user’s needs but positively impacting living and not living environment.
Vidhi’s project is on nature-inspired sustainability through the design of an office space that has several innovative features while ensuring low impact on the environment. The colours used in this design include a palette of green, browns, blue, metal, orange, grey, and wood, basically elements reminiscent of nature and endowed with warmth. Wooden furniture and glassy materials are used throughout to usher in sustainability and transparency.
The pods are designed to be biophilic; that is, they incorporate natural forms and materials to provide comfort inside the setup, thus contributing positively to occupant well-being. Featured here are the very newest virtual and augmented reality technologies that will give a futuristic and fully immersive feel to this office space. These technologies are incorporated into the design to allow highly interactive and engaging environments for their users.
Vidhi’s project falls into innovative office space design. It flows well with the use of curves, just like the natural flow noted in nature, which can make a person calm and productive at work. More biophilic elements, such as plants and natural materials, enable the space to remain connected with nature and be friendly to the environment.
