Alora: God’s Light – JD Design Awards 2024

Ichith Gandhi, a student of BSc in Interior Design & Decoration, JD School of Design Bangalore, participated in the JD Design Awards with this innovative project, “Alora: God’s Light.” This project focuses on the design and development of a new high-dependency Dependency Unit that will bring solace and comfort to patients through various advanced technologies and sensitive design principles.

“Alora: God’s Light” is an HDU design project focusing on the comfort, mental health, and healing processes of patients. The project combines advanced technologies with architectural elements in a therapeutic setting to attain both physical and psychic recovery for the patients. Much research was done regarding environmental factors and how they impacted the welfare of patients, hence influencing features such as Magpie Sunroof Technology and Colour Theory Application, among others, with large windows.

The design philosophy behind “Alora: God’s Light” puts together an all-inclusive healing environment catering to both the physiological and psychological needs of patients. By utilising the latest lighting technology, evidence-based colour theory, and architectural features that maximise natural light and outdoor views, the HDU brands itself as an area for promoting the process of healing.

These three factors—sustainability, futuristic design, and the unison of natural elements with advanced technologies—create a more comfortable, soothing, and healing environment. The idea of upcycling materials, developed here, gives meaning to materials like reclaimed wood and recycled glass by transforming waste into something beautiful and valuable. Large windows with natural light were part of the biophilic design that drew nature closer to the patient for him to benefit from.
The material board for “Alora: God’s Light” is a collection of sustainable materials for healing and transforming. The mood board is representative of the feel and general atmosphere of the space; that is, tranquil, natural, and innovative, with earthy tones and shades of green, brown, and neutrals, offset with brightly coloured hues inspired by nature.

Ichith Gandhi’s vision of a sustainable future is what Alora refers to as God’s Light. The idea of sustainability is merged with design innovation to result in a high-dependency unit dedicated to the comfort and well-being of patients. Thus, other than adding glamour to healthcare environments, it fosters environmental consciousness and community engagement. This project, therefore, has managed to prove that design might prove to be an extremely powerful means for change to happen and bring about sustainability by inspiring people to transform spaces and lives.
