Flexible and Adaptable Space at Home – JD Design Awards 2024
Harshitha S, a final-year MSc Interior Design student from JD School of Design, Bangalore, presented her thoughtful project “Flexible and Adaptable Space at Home” at the JD Design Awards 2024. The project aims to meet the essential need for change within the fast-moving, dynamic society of today practically and appropriately through advanced aesthetics in adaptive space at home.

This research for the future home is based on designing and conceptualization. She has been working on constructing flexible and adaptive, aesthetically pleasing, highly functional spaces according to the changing needs of the residents. The approach will help optimise space use, comfort, and an inclusive environment for all age groups. Increasing demands for efficiency and flexibility in residential design inspired Harshitha’s project.
This project synthesises modern design principles with practical solutions for versatile and future-proof homes. In the design process itself, modular furniture, multi-functional furniture pieces, sofas with multiple functions, double beds, or tables that fold—introduced when one is not using them—maximise the use of space and create zones for all at-home activities: work, rest, and recreation. Movable partitions and flexible furniture empower the residents to change spaces around depending on their needs.

It takes its cue from the futuristic theme of clean lines, geometric shapes, and a minimalist aesthetic that is at the heart of Harshitha’s project.
According to a colour scheme that marries electric blues with neon green and iridescent finishes, the design brings about a feel that is dynamic and energetic. The colour palette is not only suggestive of the futuristic, but it also creates an effect of calmness and serenity. These range from luminous metals like chrome and brushed aluminium to warm, natural materials such as reclaimed wood and bamboo. Again, emphasis is given to modern design that can be sustainable by including new material options like carbon fibre or bio-based polymers. Advanced technologies will be installed to enable effortless working in the space.
The sensors would monitor the environmental conditions smartly, adjusting the lighting, temperature, and ventilation automatically, creating the ideal way of living, following the principles of sustainable living, optimising comfort, and ensuring energy efficiency. State-of-the-art technology, use of green materials, feel of the futuristic Harshitha S. It is a sneak peek of what the future residential design will be—the kind of home that transforms into a dynamic living environment, evolves with the living, and becomes much more than just a place to live in.
