Immersive Interior Design in Virtual Reality – JD Design Awards 2024

Nisha Kumari, a BSc Interior Design & Decoration student at JD School of Design in Bangalore, has received the JD Design Award for the Best Virtual Experience. Her project, “SimLab VR Quest for Interior Design,” received a lot of attention because of the new approach to redesigning interior design using virtual reality tools. The creative interior designs showcased in some of Nisha’s work portray the integration of trendsetting technology in the field, making her a promising proponent.

SimLab VR Quest for Interior Design is an interior design idea different from the conventional approach to designing interiors, it uses virtual reality (VR) to help create and offer a unique experience. This software enables the designers, their clients, and other stakeholders to access, manipulate, and share interior design designs in a real-life environment. Some of the most common uses are the possibility of putting on a VR headset and holder and navigating the physical space in a VR space, containing all the elements of the VR space at true-to-life size and real-time interaction.

The essence of the educational game SimLab VR Quest is based on the principles of game thinking in the design activity. It directs the users through a set of activities, tasks, and hurdles in terms of furniture placements, colour choices, or space design and its permutations to achieve set objectives. In addition to the above reasons, this approach also taps into people’s interests. It keeps them motivated and increases the learning and retention of skills resulting from the experiments. It also allows for multiple participants to independently occupy the environment while allowing them to interact and decide with each other freely.

Nisha’s project also has highly designed materials and a mood board for office space, describing modernity, sophistication, and functionality. The material board also shows the quality and finish of the materials involved, like the neat, polished concrete floor for the amendment areas and comfortable ergonomic office furniture furnished with quality and fashionable fabrics. Wall finishes are textured wallpapers, specific colour shades of the wall, and geometrically patterned feature walls to give depth and character. Lighting samples include the general lighting, the decorations, and the functional lights, such as the recessed LED panel lights, pendant lights above the working area, and the floor lamps to bring out the aesthetics of the workspace.
