The Timeless Mends – JD Design Awards 2024

Welcome to the world of the timeless “Mends” collection, where kintsugi and mysore silk come together to create a world of beauty. This precious collection was created by Laasya C. and Varshini S., the students of the BSC in Fashion Design at the JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore. This collection expresses that ugly is beautiful in opposition to the Kintsukuroi technique, in which Japanese craftsmen fix pottery with gold. Every piece in this collection is much more than a mere dress, as it symbolizes the spirit to rise up and the cultural exchange that occurs between the east and the west through the exchange of artistry and creativity.

ILLUSTRATIONS

The Timeless Mends collection promotes the code of accepting the imperfections of an object and regarding them as part of the object’s history and beauty, following the kintsugi concept. Kintsugi, also known as ‘Kintsukuroi’, is the art of repairing ceramics with gold or any precious metal and emphasizing the cracks as an added beauty of the item. Likewise, every saree in this Mysore silk collection exemplifies this philosophy, in which the borders and embroidery of the sarees are encrusted with wire. This touch of creativity is an indicator of the rebirth of cultural assets where traditional practices are combined with modern artistic trends.

This collection was created to explain the specificity of a woman’s dress as a garment that connects history and the present and is both historical and fashionable. Conductive wire makes the object look more modern and attractive and, at the same time, reflects the continuity of the traditional techniques and their applicability in the contemporary world.

JDDA 2024

The collection identified as Timeless Mends is not just apparel but is a philosophy in itself. In this way, by applying the concept of kintsugi to the aesthetic of using Mysore silk fabric, the piece of art becomes a textile that signifies culture. This blend helps one to retain and renew techniques that are conventional and brings out how they are inapplicable in the modern world today. The use of conductive wire in the embroidery also applies contemporary effort, while the meaning behind it represents the blend between traditional aesthetics and contemporary functionality to guarantee that these are not only fashionable but also functional garments.

All the sarees are made out of the finest Mysore silk fabric and are handwashed in pastel and muted colors; to say the least, they are classic and carry a lot of history with them. As for the conductive wire itself, it adds depth and volume to the fabrics, which tells about the continuity and existence of the collection. Timeless Mends comes under the ethnic wear category of this store, and it is styled in a way that boasts both traditional style and style that is modern and does not come under any specific summer or winter outfit. Every saree depicts the elegance of flaws and the strength of cultural apparel, and thus, it should be a perfect asset to any wardrobe that wants the fringe benefits of anecdotal endurance and beauty.
