Prerna S is a student at JD School of Design, Bangalore, studying towards her BSc in Interior Design & Decoration. She has entered the JD Design Awards 2024 with the project Oasis, conceptualising an innovative approach to the creation of living spaces by reflecting and supporting their natural environment while meeting the functional needs of the modern era.
Oasis is a future concept, nature-inspired by Prerna, imagined to serve all basic facilities to the people and workers who often travel from one state to another. Services include a car wash, cafe, rest area, washroom, shower area, and dressing area. The design focuses more on natural elements so 80% of the space can be covered with eco-friendly material. It ends up creating the exact atmosphere of calmness and serenity.
Inspiration for Oasis started with the growing concerns about heat and hygiene. Prerna recognised that nature plays an ideal recluse, where everyone would wish to spend their day protecting themselves from heat and maintaining hygiene. In the design process, natural elements would be integrated into this futuristic space in response to the possible absence of trees, water, and energy. By integrating the crux with nature, Prerna wants to emphasise the fact that the future habitat should consist of natural resources and sustainability.
The whole idea of the project was based on working in perfect synchronisation between nature and functionality. Oasis acts as a pacing or bridging link with nature, meaning that it represents much more in the future, when heat’s innervation is on the increase, while at the same time providing a cool, calm, serene ambience surrounded by trees and plants. Prerna’s ideal of futurism is a lot more than technology and AI; it speaks about natural elements needed in sustainable design. She feels the core of futuristic design is to not ignore what is ignored in the examples of contemporary places—nature.
OASIS is envisioned as a modern rest area at the edge of a National Road that provides the user with a tranquil and restful environment. The project draws from the concept of an advanced rest place, thus being designed with modern facilities but embedded with the natural environment. Prerna redefines the concept of rest space by the best of nature, with the modern trait underlying a new meaning towards sustainability and environmental consciousness in interior design.
Prerna wants to inspire and educate about how natural elements can be integrated into modern living spaces through Oasis. It’s a vision that looks into the future, where technology and nature will coexist in perfect harmony.
