Meghana K. V., a student pursuing an MSc in Interior Design at JD School of Design, Bangalore, presented an innovative project entitled “Open Waves: Beyond the Ordinary: A Parametric Office” at the JD Design Awards 2024. Her work is focused on making conventional office spaces functional and inspirational workplaces that express and highlight creativity, sustainability, and innovation. She showed how parametric design principles could be deployed to create dynamic and adaptive office environments.
“Open Waves: Beyond the Ordinary” is a holistic design philosophy oriented towards parametric principles. An office space should be able to evolve and self-adjust to users’ requirements, new technologies, and environmental elements. Meghana focuses on generative systems and computational algorithms that run multiple design iterations to create complex and highly optimised solutions that traditional methods cannot deliver.
The office space should serve as an interactive setting where it provides sensors, actuators, and smart technologies so that it can respond by itself to user behaviour patterns, environmental conditions, and spatial requirements. Such adaptability also improves comfort, productivity, and efficiency. Moreover, incorporating biophilic features of natural light and greenery will create an environment friendly for occupants’ well-being and creativity by making them feel more connected with nature.
This office space is easy to redesign, expand, or reuse flexibly to provide personalized environments that are apt for different styles of working. They can customize their working environment by the users of modular furniture systems, movable Partitioning systems, and variations in workplace layout. The use of such a strategy gives the users a sense of belonging and self-respect, as is quite evident by looking at the choice of materials, installation of energy-efficient systems, and waste reduction strategies. With the innovative use of new technologies that blend in sustainable design, the design will help reduce the ecological footprint by creating a model against which environmentally responsible office spaces could be compared.
The parametric design aesthetic of “Open Waves” features bold, three-dimensional forms and innovative materials that convey a feeling of futuristic vision. The interior design incorporates elements of organic shapes borrowed from natural forms and cutting-edge digital elements like interactive touch screens and responsive installations. The combination is at once visually stimulating and engaging for exploration and collaboration alike. In “Open Waves: Beyond the Ordinary—A Parametric Office,” Meghana K. V. envisions the office space as a changing, versatile space that can bring out a delicate act of balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal.
