Sakshi Jain, an MSc in Interior Design student from JD School of Design, Bangalore, won Best Design Strategy for her project Sukoon Safar: Find Your Peace on the Move at the JD Design Awards 2024. The innovative concept takes a new perspective on the urban commute through luxury and wellness, with refined bus experiences answering current urban stressors while foreseeing future wellness trends.

Inspired by the mesmerising Northern Lights, Sukoon Safar is a conceptualised public transport of the future that could turn maddening rush hours into relaxation and rejuvenation. The motivation behind the project was to tackle problems regarding urban gridlock and increasing stress levels, especially in Bangalore, where congestion affects not only time but also mental health. Design was also oriented through the use of nature, smart furniture, and advanced technology to create a commute experience that is relaxing and enriching.

The bus integrates multi-functional furniture. The Volvo 9700 Double Decker Bus can be used for Sukoon Safar to ensure access, space, and a sleek design, making it an ideal mobile wellness centre. The design also envisions several wellness zones: a hi-tech reception area, a meditation room, a social club, a state-of-the-art massage room, single escape pods, a blooming pantry, and a multi-sensory bathroom. It also features VR relaxation pods and adaptable mood lighting to further enhance the passenger experience.

Sukoon Safar goes absolutely in line with the theme of “future fiction” since it puts up a visionary solution for the challenges posed in urban commute. This design trend project represents the future of interior design with its trendy, multipurpose furniture; for it, adaptability and functionality are the keys. Drawing further influences from nature, biophilic design—with its LED lights filtering through frosted acrylic panels and soft rustling of leaves from an indoor garden—uses calming colors and phenomena from the Northern Lights to take one on a journey of reducing stress.

The Sukoon Safar material board combines plush, neutrally coloured carpeting for comfort and sound, sleek acrylic panels with integrated LED lighting, and serene imagery suggestive of the Northern Lights. Greenery elements, such as potted plants and living moss walls, bring nature indoors and further promote well-being and the relaxation of commuters. It is in this way that advanced technologies and natural elements are imaginatively combined to create a futuristic, serene environment for urban mobility.

By adopting a wellness-centric approach, Sukoon Safar empowers a sense of agency and community, making daily commutes refreshing and truly memorable. The design digests advanced technologies ranging from the mobile booking app to the escape pods, embracing the digital future of transportation. To sum up, Sukoon Safar has a vision of the future where commuting is not only effective but also enriching and life-changing, setting a new benchmark in urban mobility.
