In addition to its numerous alumni, JD School of Design is also home to one exceptional student. Abhirami Ram Mohan, a graduate of the BSc. in Interior Design and Decoration, holding 3rd rank, always had a passion for creativity that extended beyond the theoretical applications. She has actively sought opportunities to gain practical experience in the field. This included freelance projects, internships, or participation in design competitions. Abhirami actively wanted to translate her creativity into physical spaces. She was always eager to learn from experienced professionals and contribute her unique perspective to creating functional and inspiring environments. And this persistent learning earned her the Special Jury Award for Transient Tangles.
Interest in the design program:
The interior design program at JD School of Design helped her develop a keen interest in designing spaces. Learning through books, documentaries, podcasts, and timely research guidance helped fuel her passion for interior design. Abhirami cultivated her desire to design spaces over time, constantly influenced by visionary creators such as Neri Oxman, whose work pushed the boundaries of design with biomimicry. Ruth Carter’s practicality in creation brought stories to life, helping her push the boundaries of design with biomimicry. These people also inspired her to design interiors with a sense of sustainability. An additional source of inspiration were artists like Olafur Eliasson, who challenged perception through installations and sparked her curiosity about using design to create experiences.
Reading books such as ‘Sapiens’, which delves into human ingenuity; ‘Undesign’, which promotes user-centred design; and ‘The Design of Everyday Things’, which underscores the significance of thoughtful design for interaction, further fueled her inspiration and reaffirmed her ambition to advance in the interior design field.
Reflecting on her learning experience:
Abhirami expresses that with JD School of Design, learning was never monotonous. It has always been a combination of resources and subjects, the comfort of a free flow of knowledge and the space given to experiment with designs. Her experiences with faculties, workshops, and the JDDA project had a significant impact on the development of her design skills. During her thesis jury, she expressed her views on life as a designer, believing that celebrating others can help us celebrate our own successes. Helping and being kind are important, especially in the creative field. Design or being a designer is not just about me; it is a collaborative effort, and the emotions of every single person involved matter.”
Everything from those three years means a lot to Abhiram, be it her family, friends, strangers on the roads of Bangalore, Jeffrey and Leo Uncle from the café where she spent most of time with her friends and the roads of the house where she resided, which” had a huge impact on her creative approach.
She found a platform at JD School of Design to explore her identity as a designer and an artist. At the JD School of Design, they not only trained her as a designer but also empowered her to discover her unique artistic voice and translate her individuality into impactful design solutions.
Her achievement:
Abhirami’s main goal was never to attain a rank; it was her passion to learn and create endless possibilities for space design that drove her towards her aim. However, in addition to her passion for learning and creating numerous exceptional designs, achieving a rank was an emotionally charged moment for her, one that has consistently kept her engaged. Thoughts and emotions suddenly made sense while designing. This reflected on her overall success. With newfound confidence in her abilities, Abhirami could delve deeper into design, pushing the boundaries of her creativity and tackling even more ambitious projects. Abhirami’s passion for creating a vision for sustainable design space propelled her towards the future, which is filled with artistic excellence.
