Beauty is Pain by Shreya K. Y

B.Sc. in Fashion and Apparel Design 2022

Beauty is Pain, an avant-garde fashion collection designed by Shreya K. Y, squarely confronts the paradoxes and assumptions built into the pursuit of beauty. This clothing defies the notion that beauty must be painful, muted, or complacent, offering garments that are confidently expressive, emotionally unbridled, and visually aggressive.

Shreya draws inspiration from the painful histories and modern-day pressures women have endured in the name of beauty—footbinding, corsetry, and cyber-perfection. Rather than sentimentalising that suffering, she reclaims it. Using crushed silks, tough leather, and sheer mesh in her garments, her creations couple fragility with defiance. Each garment harbours an unspoken tension between vulnerability and strength, restraint and rebellion.

Her tailoring is measured: tight stitches, sloping seams, frayed threads. They refer to the burden of expectation, but also to the power of rebellion. The garments don’t scream, but neither do they whisper. They’re sulky, resolute, and full of meaning. Less about fitting in, more about engaging.

The collection resonates with those who value depth and individuality over conventional glamour. These aren’t simply clothes—they’re statements. They challenge the wearer to confront how much we’re willing to endure to be considered beautiful, and whether that should be the cost at all.

With Beauty is Pain, Shreya is not only revolutionising fashion sense; she’s also raising voices. In every edit and fabric choice, she provokes us to question, to feel, and to reinterpret beauty on our own terms.
